James Potter was an excellent student too. You have to be good to be an Animagus at just 15, assuming the form of a stag.
I think James was a skilled duellist, escaping Voldemort three times. When they met for the fourth time, he was eventually killed; though he lacked a wand on this occasion.
What make you so sure that Snape was an excellent student? He didn't like DADA. He was more interested in just the dark arts. Very talented potion maker though as Slughorn said. I bet James was better than him in transfiguration.
Also James helped write the Marauders map.
