This thread is going to seem random but it made me smile, lol. Yesterday, I had a tutorial meeting where my new tutor told me that Harry Potter was not suitable to write about because it had no 'substance' and was just children's literature, which upset me a bit coz he hasn't even read the books, and was acting like I'm really babyish.
Today, the same tutor was giving a lecture on Nietzsche's 'Genealogy of Morals', which is about the 'will to power' and how nothing really matters (there is no morality- no good or evil) except 'strong' people who actively seek to dominate over people due to an innate 'will to power' which everyone has, and 'weak' people who try to ignore that 'will' but it ends up internalized and expressed in other ways. Any HP quotes come to mind???
Which one? They talk about Regulus and Voldemort, then Sirius says "it's a lifetime of service of death".
The quote that came to mind in the lecture was Quirrell in Philosopher's Stone: "There is no good or evil. There is only power, and those too weak to seek it", which could have come straight from Nietzsche! Who says Harry Potter has no substance!?
I noticed it too. Some quotes and some of Voldy's ideology is very much like Nietzche. Also both Grindelwald and Voldermort (the latter mostly) have alot of parallels to Hitler and the Third Reich. I think your tutor should read the books before making a blanket statement.

I agree, part of me wants to write the essay anyway, but I know if I do that I'll definitely get a bad mark when I tried to say there was philosophical ideas in the books, he said anyone can read anything into anything and basically implied I was making it up. If I had more time, I'd do an essay on HP as well as another one, but I've already got 30 000 words to write for other modules by March.
