The only deaths in the first couple of books are as follows:
From Philosopher's Stone:
James and Lily Potter
Quirinius Quirrell
Cuthbert Binns
Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington (Nearly Headless Nick)
Nicolas and Perenelle Flamel
^And four of them were dead prior to the first chapter; unless you don't count James and Lily, which you should. Without their immediate deaths, there's no story.
From Chamber of Secrets:
Moaning Myrtle
The Basilisk
^One of these deaths is a good thing and the other happened thirty-nine years prior to Harry Potter's birth.
Those deaths are hardly "all characters".
In my personal opinion, deaths are good because it intensifies a story. Makes it a bit more dramatic and creates an emotional attachment with the reader; especially if the character is well-loved or even well-hated.
