Good and bad film adaptations?
Which books have you read that you feel were made into film really well and which do you think were disasterous? And what books would you like to see translated into a movie?

I thought Twilight was horrible, but the first 4 Harry Potter movies did an excellent job at recreating Harry.

You didn't like the Twilight movie? I did! Haha, I think Twilight is one of those films you either love or hate, a marmite movie
I mostly agree with you on the HP films, I think 1 and 2 were pretty loyal to the books and 4 was a good movie in it's own right, but I think 3 and 5 were absolutely awful. Prisoner of Azkaban was my favourite book and the film was just disasterous, and too much was missed out of OotP, it seemed like a different story. Where was Snapes worst memory?!

Nah, Twilight was a tweener for me. I thought it was silly and unrealistic, yet appealed to me somewhat. So I thought it was eh.
And as for Prisoner of Azkaban, I only liked it because that's when I think Emma looked her best. In the newer ones, she's okay, but they've completely abandoned trying to make her look like the book Hermione would.

Haha I think the unrealistic-ness of Twilight is what appeals to me haha, thats why I love fantasy, real is boring :P
Yeah I wish they'd be a little more loyal to book Hermione, I've always thought Emma was great as the character, but I just wish they wouldn't alter the iconic image of Hermione so much, just let her have the bushy hair and don't make her so girly.

terribly sorry, but it must be said...the Harry Potter adaptations are horrible. I mean one was great. but what you've got like a 200 page book? the second was great as well...the third i really loved the new directors take on it, but 1-5 (and i'm hoping NOT 6) have been absolute crap. i mean from a movie stand-point, they're great. based off the books, they suck. they rush through...and the hair/makeup is bad now, they don't even look like their characters, quite disappointing really.

I think they're great stand-alone movies. When I stopped judging Order of the Phoenix from what I knew of the book I enjoyed it much more. (I know it's hard not to make the comparison though). Movies are a totally different form of entertainment and so should be judged differently from books, surely? And you can't stop actors from growing up and yeah, they rush it and it annoys me too when they leave stuff out, but they basically have to go with the bare minimum to keep to the story flowing without making the films 15,000 hours long, unfortunately (Lord of the Rings, anyone?).
Anyway, uhh, stepping away from Harry Potter. Has anyone seen the movie of The Great Gatsby? That's a great book to movie adaptation.

I've never seen it or read it! But I will if it's worth it
What did everyone think of the LoTR films? I've never read the books before so I always feel bad saying that I love the movies. Are they good when compared to the books? I know J. R. Tolkien actually didn't want his book to be made into a performance or film...what do you think about that?...
One of my favourite book to film adaptations is probably To kill a Mockingbird, one of my favourite novels, and Gregory Peck made an awesome Atticus Finch, enough so to get Harper Lee's (the author's) approval. She stated no one would ever be able to play Atticus as well as him, so they should never remake the film, but I really would love to see another adaptation.
I also love the BBC series of Pride and Prejudice. Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy. Perfect. I preferred it to the film version with Keira Knightly. The fact it was a series meant it was kept really close to the book. I loved it, and I thought the cast were perfect Anyone else see it?

Oh my God, I adore Mockingbird. The book and the film. Both great.
I read Fellowship of the Ring and to be honest, if you think the films are long and tedious... MY GOD. It gave me a headache, made me irritable. I mean, I was 14 but STILL. It contains, in my opinion, an unecessary amount of detail and description. It gets to a point where you think "GOOD LORD MAN, GET ON WITH IT"
Oh, and another book-to-film I like is Enduring Love, even if it does stray quite a bit from the book's details, I think it's a great film.

Hahaha I remember trying to read one random page from LoTR when I was about 13, and the only word that had processed from the page to my mind was 'Samwise' hahaha, I didn't have a clue, but one day I will read it, I promise. I really do like the films though, even the extended versions but I did have to watch them all a few times to really understand everything and I still forget a lot of names in them, haha.
I think the only adaptation I really hate is the Eragon movie. OMG I think it may have been the worst film I've ever seen. I was horrfied, it was rushed, cheesy and badly cast. It didn't relate to the book at all! I'm dreading them producing Eldest and Brisingr.
